Autumn days mean cosying up with lots of layers but being able to strip down to a long sleeved tee or shirt if it does get a bit warmer. Today is a case in point where the weather here in Bristol is one minute drizzling with a blustery wind but the next minute brilliantly sunny and the sunglasses get whipped out!

Filly Cardigan, Tommy Hilfiger £100

True to the trends, the shops are filled with big slouchy jumpers and embellished knits at the moment, but a cardigan is a brilliant and versatile wardrobe staple and definitely something to be invested in.

But what shape and style? Here are our top winners and ways to where them…

The Classic Roundneck

Brilliant for smaller chested women, those with a good neck and more column like figures; look for styles that have a nipped in waist if you need curve definition!

Investment Piece- Make a feminine statement with this beautifully soft cashmere one from Brora. Instantly feminine and stylish. Wear it in the day with a pair of jeans and a cami peeking out underneath or a floaty skirt, and in the evening pair it with an evening shift dress for ultimate girly glamour!

Brora £229 (Brora.co.uk)

Boden and Pure have some lovely, more affordable options too…

Great High Street Finds – We think Hobbs and LK Bennett do great round neck cardigans that wash well and keep their shape. The LK Bennet version is slightly more fitted for a nipped in waist.

Breen Fitted Cardigan, LK Bennett  £85          Eve Cardigan, Hobbs £69

The Flattering V-Neck

V-neck cardigans are incredibly flattering on everyone, especially those who have larger boobs, carry a bit more weight, or pear shaped ladies. The deeper V-neckline draws the eye down, slims you and is great for flashing a bit of flesh or for layering colours!

Investment Piece – Cashmere or merino wool always look incredible. V necks will work well with jeans, dresses and skirts. For a smart look wear it over a tailored shirt or blouse.

Silk Cashmere Rib Cardigan, Pure £119

(Great worn as shown or you can try leaving it open and belting it in with a fun skinny belt)

Open Stitch Cashmere Cardigan- Burberry Prosum £495

(This is a gorgeous, textured knit style which is extra cosy and a nice cropped length. Great for pear shaped ladies!)

Great High Street Finds

A great relaxed look and less fitted. Pair this with a stripy breton tee and brogues or pumps in the day. But in the evening you can glam it up with skinny or cropped trousers and some cute kitten heels. This cardigan has lovely buttoned cuffs! A good shape for taller and slimmer women as its a fairly relaxed cut, but you could belt it in!

Zara £29.99

This slightly more cropped style is great for wearing with a pencil or A-line skirt and is fabulous on a pear-shaped lady.

Jigsaw £59

A great way to wear a v neck cardigan, left open and belted in over a dress. Pair with ankle boots for a more edgy look!

Cable Knit Cardigan, Hobbs £89.00

 The Long Cardigan

A long cardigan is brilliantly versatile and feminine. Wear it belted in if your’re an hour-glass or long and lean shaped lady to make the most of your waist. And if you have a bit of a tummy, or are larger on top, go for a waterfall style that hangs open. The long cardigan should be avoided by pear-shaped girls though!

Investment Piece

A great looking cardigan with nice details like suede patches on the shoulders. Have fun styling it with different belts, and it’s probably warm enough as a cover up on less cold days. Wear with skinny jeans and long leather boots or cropped trousers and ankle boots!

Long Suede Patch cardigan, Ralph Lauren £365

Great High Street Finds

This is a great shape on larger ladies but also looks fab belted in on those of you who need the waist definition. Easy to wear, relaxed daytime chic.

Slouchy cardigan, Wallis £29.50

Particularly flattering with waterfall effect tails. Really feminine and easy to wear either belted or hanging loose.

Waterfall Cardigan, The White Company £145

Another great cardigan from Hobbs! This has a collar so is a good alternative to a coat if you need to look a bit smarter. Versatile, stylish and cosy…

Olive Cardigan, Hobbs £110

And now for something a little bit different…

Seriously on trend, with an eye popping print, this knitted open jacket is great for evenings out!

With its boxy oversized shape, it will look great on slimmer ladies, paired with skinny trousers/jeans and some heels!

Dagmar Tinky Knitted Jacket, Whistles £255

This Peplum Boucle Jacket from J Crew is fabulous for pear shaped and hour-glass ladies as well as long and leans who need more feminine curves…It’s smart but still comfy to wear like a cardigan.

Boucle Peplum Jacket, J Crew £121.63

A Good style for most figure types due to the deep v-neck and nipped in waist. Smarter than a cardigan but still soft and comfortable. We love the ‘biker’ jacket styling and contrast back and sleeve detail.

Boucle Knit Jacket, Mint Velvet £69
