You would have to be blind not to have noticed that tartan is making a bit of an appearance at the moment. Coats, Shirts, dresses, trousers and shoes; you name it, it’s got a scottish clan written all over it!

But how will you wear it? And would you even want to?

As a stylist I think it’s great news for everyone. Tartan has an amazing ability to bring life to a plain or boring outfit and check is usually really flattering as long as you go for the right colours.

I have to confess, I have always had a penchant for tartan. Four years ago I splashed out on a tartan Ralph Lauren dress in the sale. It is beautifully cut and I wore it to a very special event in a Highland Castle. I absolutely loved it and had imagined I would get lots of wear out of it; but sadly it wasn’t to be. It has lived in the depths of my wardrobe ever since, and on the occasion when it’s caught my eye, caused appropriate surges of guilt!

Said dress is now going to make a glorious comeback. I’ll make it work casually with a biker jacket and some chunky boots and dress it up for the evening with some knee high boots.

My favourite high street offerings at the moment are from Jigsaw, Zara and Warehouse. Jigsaw (see the skirt above) have gone for the burgandy reds with gold thread, while Zara have gone strong on green and blue (see dress and trousers above). Warehouse have opted for striking monochrome.

I spotted these Dolce & Gabana shoes recently. I love statement shoes but sadly these are not going to find their way into my wardrobe due to the steep price tag. That hasn’t stopped me imagining how I would wear them though. And this might inspire you, if tartan is a little scary and you want to dip your toe in (quite literally) in the way of a pair of shoes…

These Asos kitten heels pictured below are a lot kinder on the purse (£25) and would add a lot of fun to anyone’s winter wardrobe. I can picture them in the day with some rolled up jeans and a baggy jumper.

While doing my research, I also found this picture of Kate wearing this tartan two piece. I don’t know how old this picture is but she looks great in it!
